Over the past two weekends, our 19U Maverick hockey team has been engaged in intense battles. Their goal? To secure a coveted spot in the MAWHA playoffs and defend the hard-earned MAWHA Championship title they clinched last season by defeating the Jr. Flyers.
Let’s dive into the thrilling hockey action:
- Lady Patriots Showdown (Saturday, Jan 27):
The Maverick team faced off against the Lady Patriots in Hatfield. Starting strong, they netted a goal in the first shift and quickly added a second, followed by a third in the 2nd period. However, in the third period, the Patriots surprised them with three consecutive goals.
Undeterred, the Maverick regrouped and emerged victorious with a 4-3 win. Riley Sagirs sealed the deal with a game-winning shorthanded goal with 4:26 minutes left in the game.
- Home Turf Triumph (Saturday, Feb/3):
The Maverick team hosted the Lady Patriots at their home rink, Power Play. In a fiercely competitive match, they secured a 1-0 victory. Once again, it was Riley Sagirs who delivered the crucial goal with 3:33 minutes left in the 3rd period, which substantially added to the suspense.
This win not only secured their own playoff spot but also eliminated the Lady Patriots from contention.
- Final League Game (Sunday, Feb/4):
Facing the NJ Youth Devils, in yet another competitive game, the Maverick team clinched a 2-0 victory with goals by Lila Zelesnick and Emily Hough. This impressive performance secured them the 3rd spot in the MAWHA playoffs.
Maverick now eagerly awaits their next challenge, ready to defend their title with determination and skill!
